Mats and Mattresses
Having a good sleeping bag is important for ensuring you have a warm night sleep but for added comfort a sleeping pad, mat or mattress is highly advised. Having something between you and the base of the tent will stop the heat escaping from your sleeping bag and the cold air from the ground getting through. It will also offer protection from any objects underneath your tent.Sleeping mats and pads
These can range from a simple foam mat to an inflatable sleeping pad. The thinner, narrower pads are lightweight and usually roll up to a convenient size for backpacking. The thicker, more luxury styles can be bulkier but offer more comfort.Air Mattress
An inflatable mattress can offer real comfort when camping. Again there are several varieties ranging from simple lilo style single mattresses to luxury King size velvet top models. Inflatable mattresses are bulky so would be best carried in the back of the car. For easy inflation it is great to have a inflator which plugs straight into your cigarette lighter.Stretchers or Cots
These collapsible camping beds come in many different designs and sizes, providing a stable and comfortable night sleep. Raised off the ground with an aluminium frame and a canvas top they usually fold down into a convenient carrying bag. For extra comfort you can add a sleeping pad on top.Swags
A typically Australian tradition, a swag encompasses a tent and sleeping bag in one. It consists of a foam mattress inside a waterproof canvas cover which can be rolled up and strapped. Although bulky, a swag lessens the need for carrying a tent and sleeping bag in good weather. There are designs with poles and insect screens which keep you warm, protect you from the elements but still allow you to sleep directly under the stars.
