Choosing your site

If you are camping with a trailer, caravan, camper or motorhome, especially if it is the first time there are some considerations you will need to take into account when choosing your campsite

• If camping in a campsite, you may want to book ahead in busy periods; you won’t be able to just squeeze your camper in like you may have been able to with a tent.
• Consider the size of the spot, get out and have a look if you are not completely familiar with the size and shape of your vehicle or trailer to ensure there is enough space and that there are no obstructions.
• Check there are the necessary facilities nearby: electricity connection, water, waste disposal.
• Try and park on level ground where possible, it is not very comfortable sleeping on a slope.
• Consider space for extras: awning, table and chairs, campfire etc

Setting up

• Ensure your vehicle or trailer is stable: a wedge under the wheel to stop it rolling or wood underneath to enable your exit if the ground is wet and muddy.
• Fill your water containers or connect your water tank if facility is available.
• Ensure your electricity is connected safely and the leads are not causing any obstruction.
• Try and get set up in the daylight; it may be difficult and a nuisance to other campers to pull down awnings, find sockets etc in the dark.
• If camping in the wilderness/outback etc ensure your battery is charged and that you have sufficient water supplies with you.
