Crocodiles-Australia

Almost every river, waterhole and coastal ocean area in the top third of Australia is home to crocodiles. There are two types, the Freshwater and the Saltwater. Freshwater crocs are not considered a threat to humans but could give a nasty bite if provoked. Saltwater crocodiles are much bigger, extremely aggressive and consider people as just part of the food chain.
Freshwater crocodiles inhabit primarily fresh water sources, but are also found in tidal areas. Saltwater or Estuarine crocodiles can be found in both salt and fresh water and you should not assume that fresh water sources are not home to them.
Camping in Croc Territory
- When camping in the Top End of Australia you should always ensure your campsite is at least 50m from any water source. Crocodiles can and do leave the water so you need to ensure you are do not leave yourself vulnerable to an attack
- Crocodiles can inhabit waters as far as 300km from the coast, always seek local advice before swimming, camping, fishing or boating
- Never throw food scraps or fish guts into the water near boat landings or other public areas, this will attract crocodiles
- Burn or Remove food scraps, fish guts and other camp waste

- Observe 'No Swimming' signs. Even if you cannot see any crocodiles it doesn't mean they are not there. When hunting, they only surface to grab prey and in murky water may only be spotted when breaking the surface
- Keep kids and pets away from the waters edge where large crocs may live, they can launch themselves out of the water at great speed
- Stay away from the waters edge when preparing food or cleaning fish
- Never lean from boats or hang arms and legs over the edge
- Don't fish from overhanging logs and always stand a few metres back from the waters edge
- Stay away from crocodile nests and babies, parents can become aggressive when defensive of their young
If a crocodile attacks
Run away in a straight line. Crocodiles will chase you for about 10 m but will then need to rest. They will however, out swim you all day long.
